**Call 0711 12183471 and say one thing first: did the door fall shut, or did you turn the key?** A door that was pulled shut costs from 59 € during the day, a properly locked one from 79 €. You will need to show that you live there: an ID, post with your name on it, or a neighbour who confirms it. We name the fixed price on the phone before we set off.

## Why does that one question matter so much?

It decides which tools go in the van and how long we stand at your door. A door that simply fell shut is held by the latch alone, the angled tongue that clicks into the strike plate. That comes open with a latch slip, and the cylinder is never touched. If you turned the key, the bolt is thrown. The cylinder then has to be picked, which takes longer and costs more.

This is also a useful test for any locksmith you call. If nobody on the other end asks about the state of the door, they cannot give you an honest fixed price either. In Stuttgart that matters: the city has a known problem with call centres that quote a low number on the phone and hand over a very different invoice at the door.

## How long will it take?

## What should I do while I wait?

* Check the obvious first. A flatmate, partner or neighbour may have a spare key, and that costs nothing.
* Do not try to force the door with a card or a screwdriver. A scratched strike plate or a bent frame turns a 59 € job into a repair.
* Have your ID ready. Without proof that you live there we cannot open the door, and that rule protects you.
* If a child or a pet is locked inside, or something is on the stove, call 112. That is an emergency, not a locksmith job.

## Will the door be damaged?

In over 98 % of cases we open doors without any damage, using latch slips, picking tools and air wedges. Drilling is a last resort, only when the cylinder is already defective or a locked high-security door leaves no alternative. ## FAQ

- **Do you speak English on the phone?**: Yes. Call 0711 12183471 and say you would prefer English. You can also send a photo of the lock by WhatsApp; a picture often explains the situation faster than words and tells us which tools to bring.

- **I have no ID with me, it is inside the flat. What now?**: That is the normal case, and it is solvable. Post addressed to you in the letterbox works, so does a neighbour who confirms that you live there, or a rental contract you can pull up on your phone. We just need something reasonable, not a formal procedure.

- **Who pays if I am a tenant?**: If you locked yourself out, normally you do. Some private liability policies cover a lost key and the lock change that follows. - **My key broke off in the lock.**: Please do not try to fish it out with tweezers and do not spray oil into the cylinder. Both push the fragment deeper or gum up the mechanism. We pull the broken part with an extractor needle, and in most cases the cylinder survives and does not need replacing.
